Since I was 4,I have wanted to do everything and anything—from softball to soccer to basketball to flag football. All that changed in my sixth grade year when I tried out for Line Dance; I had finally found my passion(激情)、I danced all my life,so I wasnt nervous for this tryout(选拔赛)nor was it a problem for me. But as an eighth grader,at the end of the year,I walked into tryouts for Lincoln Line Dance.I was scared to death walking into a big school. So many unfamiliar faces were staring at me as I walked into the gym.It was the most busy and emotional threeday tryout of my life. Our instructor put us through a hard workout. My freshman year showed me being on Line Dance isnt as easy as it looked, but I prevailed. Our season ends in late May and starts in midJuly with preBand Camp and Band Camp.Throughout that year,we participate in competitions,10 parades and every field show for football season. Most importantly,we are also members of the Lincoln High School Concert Band, not to mention the threetofourhour heavy practices we have every week. Sometimes we even have two practices a day. When we are getting ready for competition, the practices double.

But all this work is worth it when we step on football field for the first football game, and see everyone in the stands. We forget how nervous we are.Seeing the little girls in the stands with their eyes glued to you,as you dance, saying they want to be just like you, makes everything worthwhile. When we have a bad performance, which sometimes we do,there are plenty of upset faces. We put our blood, sweat, and tears into dancing, and we love to hate it.Throughout the year,we 10 girls become like sisters.Like all sisters,we have our disagreements and quarrels.

Many people in high school cannot wait to go to college and leave their hometown behind.Questions arise, though, when it comes to all of the decisions involved in choosing a college. One of the first considerations may be finance.State and public colleges are often the least expensive.Often, though, the better colleges are private and more expensive. It is sad when gifted students cannot attend a college of their choice just for financial reasons. Another major factor is location.Whether the college is in a small town or large city can have a major impact on its activities.A water lover probably will be more comfortable spending four years near an ocean or a lake. Those who cannot tolerate heat will probably be more comfortable at a northern college.Distance from home may also come into consideration. If family is a top priority, that person should stay close to home; on the other hand, if independence is desired, a campus farther from home would be more appropriate. School size also plays a major role in the decision process. If you want to get to know your teachers, a small college is suitable. For those of you who consider yourself a “people_person” and want a wide range of activities, a large college is more fitting. Your area of interest is another factor to consider in the decisionmaking process if you want to get the most from your education. The whole point of college is to learn what is of interest to you. Crucially(至关重要地), one must take into consideration the colleges by which you can realistically be accepted. An Ivy League school for an average student would probably not be a good match.Similarly, an average school for an aboveaverage student would not work well. The college should provide enough of a challenge for the student to work hard.Although there may not be the perfect college out there, there probably will be one that is close. Those who cannot find a suitable college are probably not looking hard enough.

1、When it comes to going to college the author thinks ________. A、financial situation is the first to be considered B、students are unwilling to leave their home C、students will become homesick

D、students are eager to attend their ideal university 答案:A

2、What is the main idea of the third paragraph? A、Students can be independent at college. B、A long distance will make students upset. C、The location of the college is a main factor.

D、The climate must be taken into consideration.

3、What does the underlined part “people person” in the passage mean?

  A、A person of great capacity.

  B、A very particular person.

  C、A very sociable person.

  D、A person of great importance.

根据画线词后的“want a wide range of activities”可知,people person“想在大学期间参加很多活动”,即喜欢社交的`人。故选C项。

4、Which is the most important factor when choosing a college? A、The location of a college.

  B、The examination result.

  C、School size.

  D、The coming challenges.

I have been teaching the tenthgrade English for four years.Needless to say, I love my subject and promise to one day pass my love of literature on to my future students.Well, I must admit, I have made more than a difference.I have changed the way students perceive (感知) literature and have even inspired some to become English teachers. One student in particular is named John.I met him last year when he was a student in my English class. He sat in the back often, saying very little. However, I sensed that he was taking in all that I taught.John was never absent nor was he late.He seemed very mature for his age. As the year progressed, we read lots of poetry and various stories

about different cultures and reallife experiences.I have always wanted literature to speak to my students so that they could find related connections which would finally give them that motivation(动力) to read, write and interpret. While reading and writing poetry, John wrote some beautiful poetry that spoke of his experiences in America. On the last day of school, students were asked to write a brief autobiographical essay and to dedicate (献给) it to someone he or she thought was significant in his or her life.John dedicated his essay to me and used clip art that decorated the dedication with roses. He stated in the essay that “Some people you meet in life are flowers, but then there are those who are roses.Ms Hopkins, I just want you to know that you are a rose in my life and I have enjoyed every minute of being in your class. You have shown me that I have a purpose in life and that I am a poet.I will never forget you.” Tears streamed down my eyes.I had had a particularly hard personal life that year but somehow that letter made it worth the struggle.

Professor Smith recently persuaded 35 people, 23 of them women, to keep a diary of all their absent-mindedactions for a fortnight. When he came to analyse their embarrassing lapses(差错)in a scientific report, hewas surprised to find that nearly all of them fell into a few groupings, Nordid the lapses appear to be entirely random(随机的).

One of the women, for instance, on leaving her house for work one morning threw her dog her earrings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear. "the explanation for this is that the brain is like a computer," explains the professor. "People programme themselves to do certain activities regularly. It was the woman’s custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her earrings. But somehow the action got reversed in the programme," About one in twenty of the incidents the volunteers reported were these "programme assembly failures,"

Altogether the volunteers logged 433 unintentional actions that they found themselves doing---an average of twelve each, There appear to be peak periods in the day when we are at our zaniest(荒谬可笑的).These aretwo hours some time between eight a.m. and noon, between four and six p.m. with a smaller peak between eight and ten p.m."Among men the peak seems to be when a changeover in brain’ programmes’ occurs, as for instance between going to and from work." Women on average reported slightly more lapses----- 12.5 compared with 10.9 for men m probably because they were more reliable reporters.

A startling finding of the research is that the absent-minded activity is a hazard of doing things in which we are skilled. Normally, you would expect that skill reduces the number of errors we make. But trying to avoid silly slips by concentrating more could make things a lot worse m even dangerous.

  B. hazards can be avoided when people do things they are good at

  C. people should be careful when programming their actions

  D. lapses cannot always be attributed to lack of concentration

本文第1句中的to keep a diary of all their absent-minded actions就是指to keep a record of what they did unintentionally,题目中的subjects指实验对象,被测试者。

根据第2句中nearly all of them fell into a few groupings可以找到本题答案,题目中的discover是该句中find的同义词,A的.patterns与原文中的groupings意义相同。

C的unconsciously与somehow对应,change the sequence of doing things与the action got reversed对应,故本题选C。

Most of us are taught to pay attention to what is said—the words. Words do provide us with some information, but meanings are derived from so many other sources that it would hinder our effectiveness as a partner to a relationship to rely too heavily on words alone. Words are used to describe only a small part of the many ideas we associate with any given message. Sometimes we can gain insight into some of those associations if we listen for more than words.

We don‘t always say what we mean or mean what we say. Sometimes our words don’t mean anything except “ I‘m letting off some steam. I don’t really want you to pay close attention to what I‘m saying. Just pay attention to what I’m feeling.” Mostly we mean several things at once. A person wanting to purchase a house says to the current owner, “This step has to be fixed before I‘ll buy.” The owner says, “ It’s been like that for years.” Actually, the step hasn‘t been like that for years, but the unspoken message is: “ I don’t want to fix it. We put up with it. Why can‘t you?” The search for a more expansive view of meaning can be developed of examining a message in terms of who said it, when it occurred, the related conditions or situation, and how it was said.

When a message occurs can also reveal associated meaning. Let us assume two couples do exactly the same amount of kissing and arguing. But one couple always kisses after an argument and the other couple always argues after a kiss. The ordering of the behaviors may mean a great deal more than the frequency of the behavior. A friend‘s unusually docile behavior may only be understood by noting that it was preceded by situations that required an abnormal amount of assertiveness. Some responses may be directly linked to a developing pattern of responses and defy logic. For example, a person who says “No!” to a serials of charges like “You’re dumb,” “You‘re lazy,” and “You’re dishonest,” may also say “No!” and try to justify his or her response if the next statement is “And you‘re good looking.”

We would do well to listen for how messages are presented. The words, “If sure has been nice to have you over,” can be said with emphasis and excitement or ritualistically. The phrase can be said once or repeated several times. And the meanings we associate with the phrase will change accordingly. Sometimes if we say something infrequently it assumes more importance; sometimes the more we say something the less importance it assumes.

1.Effective communication is rendered possible between two conversing partners, if ___.

A.they use proper words to carry their ideas.

B.they both speak truly of their own feelings.

C.they try to understand each other‘s ideas beyond words.

D.they are capable of associating meaning with their words.

2.“I‘m letting off some steam” in paragraph 1 means___.

  A.I‘m just calling your attention.

  B.I‘m just kidding.

  C.I‘m just saying the opposite.

D.I‘m just giving off some sound.

3.The house-owner‘s example shows that he actually means___.

A.the step has been like that for years.

B.he doesn‘t think it necessary to fix the step.

Thirteen years ago, the Planet Earth wildlife documentary took us all on an amazing journey. We went from deep rainforests to the bottom of the ocean. Now a new one ,Our Planet, will let us see different animals and the influence of humans on the natural world. The documentary covers 50 countries and areas. It took more than four years to produce it. With the latest 4K video technology, the show allows people a wonderful new look at nature. "People are given a chance to better get themselves into the lives of the animals” said Fothergill, one of the show s producers.

Besides showing Earth,s beauty, the documentary also talks about the planets climate conditions. "Our Planet is here to say, The planet is dying, and were killing it.’" Fothergill said. In one sad scene, hundreds of walruses(海象),half-blind when out of the water, fall down a rock and suffer a painful death on the beach below. It shows how the climate conditions have influenced their natural habitat and explains why theyve been forced to find the safe place on the rocks. But the documentary is not all about sadness. It also talks about success stories, such as the ones of tigers. These animals are saved and live happily thanks to international agreements on environmental protection.
